HyperX Cloud III S Wireless Review: Battery Life Is the Headline at $179.99
HyperX rates the Cloud III S Wireless at 120 hours on 2.4GHz, and independent testing came within a few hours of that. We weigh the comfort, the tuning and the thin boom mic against rivals at the same price.
The verdict
The best-value wireless headset for PC, PlayStation, Switch and phone players who hate charging. It runs about 113 hours on 2.4GHz in independent testing, feels light and padded, and sounds cleaner than the older Cloud III. The boom mic is thin, there is no Xbox support and no noise cancelling, so skip it if you need those.
Best forPC and PS5 players who want comfort and weeks of battery
What we liked
- About 113 hours measured on 2.4GHz, against a 120 hour rating
- Memory foam on band and cups stays comfortable for long sessions
- Bluetooth 5.3 plus a 2.4GHz dongle (USB-A and USB-C both included)
- Cleaner, less distorted sound than the original Cloud III Wireless
- Two year warranty and a detachable boom mic
What we did not
- No Xbox wireless support, so Xbox owners need a different headset
- The 10mm boom mic sounds thin next to rivals around $180
- No simultaneous 2.4GHz and Bluetooth audio
- No quick charge: a full top-up takes about five hours
- The NGENUITY app is Windows only and there is no 3.5mm jack
Most wireless headsets ask you to plug them in every week or so. The Cloud III S Wireless asks you to do it roughly once a month. That one fact is the reason to look at it, and nearly everything else about it is a sensible, slightly plain package built around that promise.
The battery claim holds up
HyperX rates the headset at up to 120 hours on the 2.4GHz dongle and up to 200 hours on Bluetooth. Ratings like that are usually flattering. SoundGuys measured 113 hours and 27 minutes on 2.4GHz, which is about 95 percent of the claim and still several times what most rivals manage.
For a player who uses it two hours a night, that is close to two months between charges. The catch: there is no quick charge, and a full refill takes around five hours. Plug it in before bed and forget it.
Comfort is the other half of the pitch
The headset weighs about 356 g with the boom mic on, which is middling on paper. It does not feel middling on a head. Memory foam sits in both the band and the cups, the cups are deep, and reviewers report wearing it for hours without a pressure spot. That matches what the design suggests: the clamp is gentle and the cushion is thick.
If you wear glasses or have larger ears, deep cups matter more than any spec on the box. This is the area where it beats many lighter, shallower competitors.
What it sounds like
The 53mm angled drivers are tuned for games, not for music. Against the older Cloud III Wireless, SoundGuys found cleaner reproduction and less distortion, and it scored 3.9 on its MDAQS metric against 2.7 for the predecessor. The weak spot is the 2 to 3 kHz region, where the headset lacks the lift that makes voices sound natural, so dialogue is a little recessed.
In practice that means footsteps and gunfire read clearly and bass is present without drowning the mix. For a movie night or an album, you would want a headset with a more neutral curve.
NGENUITY handles EQ presets and mic settings. If you play on a Mac or a console, you get the factory tuning and the on-headset controls: a volume wheel, a mute button and a multi-function button.
The microphone is the compromise
The detachable 10mm boom mic is fine for party chat and sounds thin when compared directly with rivals near $180. The built-in MEMS mic exists for calls on the go and is not a stand-in for the boom. If you stream or run calls for work, this is the point where we would look elsewhere.
